David Sinski is Executive Director of Heartland Human Care Services, which serves thousands of people every day. David’s passion for human rights has helped drive the organization to develop new practices based on social justice and equity for all people. For David, his choice to honor Bayard Rustin in this year’s Legacy of Pride series is just another extension of his philosophy.
“We stand on the shoulders of our LGBTQ predecessors who fought with courage, passion and conviction to ensure that civil rights were granted to all Americans. A promoter of non-violence, Bayard Rustin was often a key strategist behind leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and he promoted movements such as the Freedom Ride and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. “
For the majority of his career, David has been driven to help populations achieve their piece of the American dream through education, employment, and training – and standing up to fight the barriers that keep people from that dream.
“Rustin understood that in order to achieve full equality, our country needed to address economic disparities among African Americans and he was ahead of his time, linking racial justice with economic justice. More than fifty years after the passage of civil rights legislation, we are still fighting the causes that Bayard Rustin so passionately stood for and I honor his bravery as an out gay man for standing by his convictions, always pressing forward, challenging institutional barriers to progress and choosing non-violence to advance his cause.”
