Vice President of Engagement
Betsy Leonard is Vice President of Engagement for Heartland Alliance and is a member of the executive team leading the organization’s engagement strategy with external and internal stakeholders including board members, corporate and community partners, and volunteers.
Betsy Leonard began her career with Heartland Alliance in 1992, working as Assistant to the President and supporting special initiatives such as the Chicago-Mexico Leadership Initiative, the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, and the Midwest Human Rights Partnership for Sexual Orientation. In her role as Director of Employee Relations & Training she was instrumental in establishing Heartland University, the conceptual framework for the organization’s professional development and contextualized learning activities. Prior to being promoted to Vice President, she served as Chief Culture Officer and Senior Director of Employee Services, overseeing recruitment, onboarding, employment practice, and labor and employee relations.
Prior to joining Heartland, Ms. Leonard was a Spanish instructor at Robert Morris Junior College. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College, studied abroad at the Universitat de Barcelona, and received her Master’s degree from Tulane University. She is a 2016 Fellow of the University of Chicago Civic Leadership Academy.
