A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, Debbie Hinde will be leaving Heartland
Health Outreach at the end of June after 20 years of service. We have been
fortunate to have her as our chief development officer for nearly five years.

HHO has grown organizationally under her steadfast
leadership, and we’re truly grateful for everything she has accomplished. From
creating and implementing our annual operational planning process, to expanding
internal communication and staff engagement and cultivating a fundraising
culture in HHO, Debbie has left an indelible mark and helped create a sound foundation
on which we can grow.

Debbie also served as a key strategic leader in HIV/AIDS
services for 20 years, stabilizing Open Hand Chicago and food services,
creating Vital Bridges through the merger of three organizations in order to
offer participants the opportunity to obtain integrated nutrition, housing and
case management services, and carrying out the merger of Vital Bridges into HHO
to give clients access to HIV specialty care. Throughout her tenure, the needs
of the participant were always front and center in her mind and her decisions
were mission focused. Over the years, Debbie raised millions of dollars to
support participant services and engaged hundreds of volunteers and donors to
assure that those who have the greatest need can rely on us for high quality
services.

As of July 1, all development and communications work will
be centralized within Heartland Alliance’s Donor and Community Relations
department to align the needs of the entire Heartland Alliance
family. We look forward to your continued participation with us. Please address
any questions you may have to Rachael Carbone at rcarbone@heartlandalliance.org.

We wish Debbie much success in her future endeavors and
extend our gratitude for all that she has done for our organization and our
participants over the years.

Best regards,

Ed Stellon
Executive Director

COLOR IT SUMMER – A RAINBOW OF GOODNESS ON YOUR PLATE

Not only is summer a great time to hit the beach, have barbecues, ride bikes and enjoy the sun, its the season when fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant and inexpensive. There is nothing better when it’s hot outside than a cool salad, yogurt with fruit or marinated veggies on the grill.

The bonus, of course, is that fruits and vegetables are so good for you. Fruits and vegetables are chock full of vitamins and minerals A, C, B12, iron, potassium and so much more, which will make you feel and stay healthy all summer long.

CHEFS AND THE CITY 2016

It was an evening of delicious bites, music, raffles and cocktails at Chefs and the City on June 2 at the Montgomery Club. With more than 250 foodies in attendance, the event proceeds will fund HHO’s HIV and AIDS services.

Major event sponsors include Ariel Investments, Fortune Fish and Gourmet, Samatas Premium, Bombay Sapphire, DineAmic Group, Curb, Gibsons Restaurant Group and CS Modern Luxury.

NUTRITION WITH A CHERRY ON TOP

Cherries are officially in season! These flavor-filled, sweet little gems are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They are low in calories, as well as a great source of iron, potassium, manganese, and copper, making them a wonderful snack option or way to curve a sweet tooth. Cherries even have a low glycemic load, making them a diabetic’s best fruit friend.

Read up on the dietitians’ latest blog post about this under-rated superfood, and don’t forget to try their recommended recipe, the Cherry Summer Kale Salad with balsamic vinaigrette.
