The New Faces of Poverty

Doug Schenkelberg, associate director of policy and advocacy, recently discussed the changing face of poverty in Illinois on the "City Voices" radio program on WNUA, hosted by Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop at Columbia College. Rising unemployment has caused more and more families to fall into poverty and has overwhelmed the state's support services.

Schenkelberg emphasized the importance of making sure the state budget and tax reforms protect the most vulnerable residents. He also noted that addressing poverty as a human rights issue instead of an act of charity will positively affect how policy decisions are made.
