Giving Back at the Holidays

October 16, 2009

Kelly Fitzsimmons always wanted to help kids and families at the holidays, but didn't know who needed her help, or how to find them. "I wanted to bring some joy to families," says Kelly. "People want to reach out, not to just give money, but also to make connections, to make people smile and know they are loved."

Earlier this year, Kelly heard about Heartland Alliance through a friend. Heartland Alliance's work with international populations and refugees and immigrants here in America appealed to Kelly, who has always contributed to charitable causes and has traveled abroad extensively. Kelly formed a unique partnership with Heartland Alliance through her socially conscious business. Light Up Your Holidays is donating up to 25% of its profits from new clients who mention Heartland Alliance when signing up for its customized holiday display services. Kelly has a strong interest in charitable work, and so do her friends. A group of them have gathered to sponsor a Heartland Alliance program, Neon Street, which provides a drop-in center and transitional housing for homeless youth. "The first time we met them, we were blown away with how mature and put together the kids were. They were wonderful kids who were excited to see us. We felt like one group of folks just talking, having a great exchange."

Kelly FitzsimmonsKelly and her friends are inspired by their tie to Neon Street and have included a monthly visit with the children. In October, the group will be visiting a haunted house. In November, they will be celebrating Thanksgiving and decorating the house with festive indoor and outdoor lights. "We want to be there as a support system. We're giving back."
