For the first time in 20 years, Arnett has a job. A resident in the Cabrini-Green public housing projects, she says she has been "in and out of rehab." But she is determined to put her life on a better track, and a big part of that transformation is her work at WomanCraft.
"I do a little of everything here. I've stuffed envelopes. I've made paper. That's a sloppy job, but I like it," Arnett says shyly. "I like the people here a lot. They're very respectful, very nice. The artisans show you how it all works; they help you."
Arnett is enrolled in one of Heartland Alliance's Transitional Jobs programs, which combine skill building with meaningful work experience for individuals who have little or no job history. Her program, one of many operated by Heartland Alliance, currently serves nearly 100 individuals who are residents of Chicago Housing Authority. Through the program, Arnett will work at WomanCraft for 14 weeks, where she has the same workday as everyone else at the studio.
The Transitional Jobs program also provides Arnett with supportive services, from resume writing to someone to talk with, off site. In many ways, though, the simple power of a new schedule and routine are at the core of how she is making a fresh start. "I get the CTA bus at 6:30 in the morning and head to the clinic and then here. So far I haven't missed a day or been late once," she says. "It's a good thing to keep myself busy."
At the end of her time at WomanCraft, Arnett will have experienced the rhythm, expectations, and teamwork of a workplace. She'll have a reference and be able to cite examples of success in a job to potential employers. Her career coach will help her look for permanent employment—she says she's thinking a job in housekeeping would be a good option. And when she's moved to the next stage, her spot at WomanCraft will be ready for another woman who wants to start a new chapter in her life.
