Signature Health Care Programs

Heartland Alliance operates several programs that incorporate health care as a key component, serving a wide variety of populations. Our signature programs include:

Health Care for the Homeless

Health Care for the Homeless makes cost-free, high-quality primary, mental and oral health care available to men, women, and children who are homeless. Heartland Alliance's medical team of doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals reaches out to people in need, meeting them where they are – at shelters, single room occupancy (SRO) buildings, on the streets, or our health centers throughout the area.  Heartland Alliance's professional staff conducted nearly 100,000 health care visits last year.  Heartland Alliance is the leading organization in Chicago to offer medical care to adults and families who are homeless.

Integrated services for refugees living with HIV/AIDS

Refugees living with HIV/AIDS were first welcomed and resettled in the Midwest by Heartland Alliance, one of a handful of organizations from around the country to have the resources to address the needs of this population.  Our successful integration of culturally sensitive health care, combined with housing, job training, and supportive case management, have solidified Heartland Alliance's position as a leader in working with populations with complex needs.

Pathways Home

Pathways Home integrates the harm reduction approach by providing an alternative to life on the streets for men and women experiencing severe mental illness and substance use issues.  Pathways Home offers residents an independent, safe environment where they can receive the supportive services they want and need.  The impact is clear: 97 percent of residents adhere to the psychiatric medications and 100 percent of participants recently discharged remained housed 60 days later, an important benchmark.

Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center

Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center is recognized for its pioneering approach to treating survivors of torture based on their self-determined needs.  The program has helped survivors of political torture from 73 different nations since its founding in 1986.  Today, its expertise in trauma treatment extends beyond the U.S., with consultation and training delivered internationally including Iraq, Guatemala, and Rwanda.

Cross-cultural services

Our cross-cultural services team improves access to health care for clients with limited English proficiency. Heartland Alliance provides interpretation, translation, and interpreter training services to hospitals, schools, and other community health and legal service providers statewide. We maintain a roster of 120 interpreters who speak more than 35 languages and translate documents into 70 languages.
