Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center

The Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center is a treatment program devoted to the recovery and healing of individuals, families, and communities affected by torture. The comprehensive model of care includes, but is not limited to: mental health, medical care, case management, and interpretation and translation services. Our treatment approach is based on the key principles of empowerment, community building, and multidisciplinary services. Our staff and network of volunteers provide culturally competent care that enhance the natural resiliency of torture survivors and assists them in rebuilding their lives in Chicago.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Primary survivors of physical and psychological torture committed abroad under the color of the law
  • Family members of primary torture survivors

No fees for services.

Contact program to arrange an appointment for a screening interview.

Referral and Intake:
  • Screening interview for program eligibility
  • Complete intake will be conducted by clinical staff member

Hours available Monday – Friday evenings as needed


Languages spoken by staff:  English, Spanish, French, Russian, Khmer

Interpreters are provided in other languages as needed with on-site interpreters in more than 35 different languages and with telephonic interpreters in more than 70 languages.


This program takes appointments.

Appointments are required to receive services.
