The January 12th earthquake in Port-au-Prince resulted in the death of over 200,000 people and left hundreds of thousands more displaced. Immediately after the earthquake, Heartland Alliance recognized the vulnerability of children to trafficking and has implemented a program to monitor the principal land borders of Haiti to prevent the trafficking of children. Heartland Alliance provides trained child protection personnel to be positioned at the borders of Haiti to assist the Haitian Police to identify children who are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking, while providing guidance on child interviewing, assessing needs, referring and providing transport to placement in interim care facilities in Haiti.
In addition thousands of unaccompanied children are being cared for in hospitals in Port-au-Prince and around the country. These children, who are either separated from their families or orphaned, have not been identified and formally registered. Failing to follow up on these cases endangers children and threatens to permanently separate families. Heartland Alliance, Haiti seeks to locate and register all separated unaccompanied children who have been, or currently are, in hospitals in and around Port-au-Prince.
