First Step House

First Step House provides comprehensive, community-based substance abuse recovery housing services in a culturally appropriate manner for chronically homeless and low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS. Our program provides a therapeutic community and model program devoted to effecting change in the individual through a 12-Step model of recovery from chemical dependence. First Step House offers housing, individual and group counseling, health education, outpatient substance abuse treatment, case management and referrals to achieve housing stability, HIV/AIDS support, and addiction recovery support for our program participants.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Homeless and/or chronically homeless
  • HIV positive
  • Referral from recent treatment facility, with at least 28 days of sobriety
  • Prior treatment history
  • Men and women 18+ years of age
  • Negative TB
  • Medically stable and able to participate in all activities 
   
Fees:
  • Program fees 30 percent of income
  • Mandatory savings (amount decided between case manager and participant) 
  • Provide own transportation if participant has an income
   
Applying for Services:

Contact the program to apply for services (includes both telephone pre-screen and interview).

   
Referral and Intake:
  • Provide verification of HIV status signed by physician
  • Provide negative TB results from last 6 months signed by medical provider
  • Provide proof of homelessness and/or referral letter
  • Provide mental health assessment and medication list if history of mental illness
