Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) – English Language Training (ELT)

The English Language Training (ELT) program provides English as a second language (ESL) and employment-based English classes to all recently arrived refugees, asylees, and other immigrants. The classes are designed for individuals who know little or no English and cover "survival" topics such as transportation, housing, and health care, as well as American job culture and expectations, job opportunities, filling out job applications, and interviewing skills. Sessions at 4411 North Ravenswood Avenue are offered daily for two levels (three if there is sufficient demand): beginning and intermediate. At 5551 West Belmont Avenue, there are three levels offered daily in the morning, afternoon, and evening. A bilingual conversation class also takes place on a weekly basis.

  • Referrals to employment and vocational training programs
   
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Intake and pretest must be done 
  • Score on English language pretest must be below 65 on Best Literacy Test

Directions:

4411 North Ravenswood is less than a block away from the Montrose CTA Brown Line stop and the #78 Montrose bus. Street parking is available.

Civics classes are held at the Pan-African Association, located at 6163 North Broadway. The Granville CTA Red Line stop is one block east of the site, and the #36 Broadway bus stops right in front of the site. Street parking is available.

Business hours: Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Class Times:

  • Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a,m.
  • Monday – Thursday 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday – Friday 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Classes run on a quarterly basis. Registration for Classes is open entry at 4411 North Ravenswood. Registration for Classes at 5551 West Belmont is open until halfway through the quarter.
