These income and poverty statistics only partially reflect the impact of the current economic downturn on 2008 personal income and hence poverty. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession began in December 2007. The income reported in the 2008 ACS spans the period from January 2007 through November 2008, which includes the months in 2007 before the official start of the recession.
