Equal Rights are Human Rights

June 8, 2009

June is Pride month, when we celebrate equal rights for the LGBT community around the world!

International Projects

In some countries around the world homosexuality is not just frowned upon. It is illegal and punishable by imprisonment and even death. But regardless of how oppressive the law and culture of a country is, local LGBT activists around the world gather to advocate for equality and reform. Through the Global Equality Network (GEN), Heartland Alliance builds the capacity of local LGBT activists around the world by offering leadership training, reinforcing ongoing operations, and forging strategic partnerships - regionally and internationally.

In 2009, GEN is:

  • Supporting Sri Lankan partner Equal Ground to launch LGBT outreach efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives
  • Supporting Nigerian partner The Independent Project to launch a national LGBT rights network that partners with human rights lawyers and locally-based LGBT activists around the country
  • Supporting Lebanese partner Helem to launch a regional LGBT capacity development effort to strengthen local LGBT movements in Morocco, Jordan and Syria, as well as a project to protect and support LGBT Iraqi refugees around the region.

Health care is a human right that should not be only for those who can afford it. For people living with HIV, Heartland Alliance offers comprehensive HIV services from early prevention medical care to programs that integrate housing and health care in the same facility. We also run several programs that treat people who are living with HIV and are recovering from substance abuse.

Having a roof over your head is not just a fundamental need, but also a basic human right. At Heartland Alliance, people living with HIV can find permanent, affordable housing, receive aid during a housing crisis, and work with Heartland Alliance staff to develop live skills needed to live independently.
