Heartland Alliance International Programs

Heartland Alliance International Programs continues Heartland's mission abroad by meeting the basic human needs and ensuring the human rights of some of the most vulnerable individuals and families. Staff and volunteers from around the world provide an array of interconnected and culturally competent health, legal, and resettlement services.

Heartland Alliance International Programs build individual and organizational capacity in areas of the world that have experienced civil conflict, war, or oppression, by:

  • Incorporating torture treatment and mental health services into primary health care systems;
  • Expanding legal and protection services for survivors of gender- and sexual orientation-based violence, torture, and trafficking; child victims of war; and people with mental illness;
  • Improving access to health care for incarcerated or detained populations;
  • Strengthening community-based, non-governmental organizations’ efforts in human rights monitoring, documentation, and legal advocacy; and
  • Preserving the right to asylum through legal advocacy and documentation.
