About HIHC

Who We Are

Heartland International Health Center (HIHC) provides comprehensive primary care, mental health care, and oral health care services as well as translation in over 35 languages on the north side of Chicago.  Additionally, all of our family practice physicians hold faculty positions within the Department of Family & Community Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School.

History

HIHC was incorporated in 1993 under the name Uptown International Center (UIC) and was awarded 501(c)3 status in 1994.  In April 2000, HIHC was awarded community health center funding and began functioning as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with the approval of the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) in May 2001.

HIHC is an affiliate of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights.  However, HIHC is a fully independent organization with legal and fiduciary oversight provided by an independent Board of Directors, whose majority is made up of active HIHC patients.  The other members of the Board of Directors are community representatives who live and/or work in the service area and whose expertise helps HIHC meet its mission.

Mission

The mission of Heartland International Health Center is to improve the well-being of the communities we serve by providing accessible, high-quality healthcare.

Vision

The vision of HIHC is to be a national leader in community-based health care by advancing innovative service models and patient-centered best practices.

Values

We believe in:

  • Health care as a human right
  • Embracing diversity in all its forms
  • Collaboration and partnership
  • Fiscal prudence and transparency
  • A culture of accountability and excellence.
