GISHR and the LGBTTTI Coalition celebrate the OAS's approval of a Resolution on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation, and Gender Identity and Expression at the 44th OAS General Assembly in Asuncion, Paraguay, held June 3 - 5, 2014. The LGBTTTI Coalition's consistent SOGI advocacy at the OAS over the past seven years has ensured the approval of a resolution addressing these issues at each General Assembly since 2008.

The African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR), Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL), UHAI-EASHRI and GISHR commend the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR)'s adoption of a resolution on violence against individuals due to their real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in Africa at the 55th session of the Commission in Luanda, Angola in May 2014. The Resolution contains language specifically addressing SOGI and provides a legal basis of protection for individuals who face violence or the threat of violence due to their sexual orientation and gender identity. GISHR has been working in collaboration with African coalitions to advance SOGI-related issues within the ACHPR over the past seven years.

At the 150th Session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington, DC, GISHR supported human rights defenders from Belize to present at a thematic hearing on the situation of human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) persons in Belize. Additionally, GISHR's Latin American & Caribbean Coordinator represented the LGBTTTI Coalition at a thematic hearing on the situation of human rights of LGBTI persons in the Andean Region. GISHR and the LGBTTTI Coalition of Organizations Working at the Organization of American States (OAS) celebrate the creation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights's Rapporteurship on the Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Persons (LGBTI) to work on promoting and protecting the rights of LGBTI persons in the Americas. The Rapporteurship will begin functioning February 1, 2014 and will continue the work of the LGBTI Unit of the IACHR, which was created in November 2011. The LGBTTTI Coalition has been instrumental in advocating for the systematic inclusion of rights related to sexual orientation and gender identity within the OAS system and for the creation of a Rapporteurship on these issues.

GISHR celebrates the approval of the Inter-American Convention Against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance by the 43rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) June, 2013 in Antigua, Guatemala. The convention represents the first international convention in the Americas and the second worldwide to recognize sexual orientation and gender identity. Since 2007, GISHR and the LGBTTTI Coalition working at the OAS have been advocating for the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories from discrimination in this landmark convention.
