Summary

Heartland Housing has developed more than 1000 units of housing and currently manages more than 600 units of affordable and supportive housing for impoverished Chicagoans. Heartland Housing works within the city’s neighborhoods to identify housing and community development needs and provide innovative solutions, fostering the interdependence needed to build stable communities.

Organization

Heartland Housing is the housing partner of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, a service-based human rights organization that provides housing, health care, human services and human rights protections to more than 72,000 impoverished people annually.

Properties

Heartland Housing provides affordable and supportive housing to low-income families and individuals. Support services are offered through its partner organizations Heartland Health Outreach and Heartland Human Care Services, including budgeting, counseling, education and employment referrals to help residents become self-sufficient.

Staff

Staff are involved in all aspects of the real estate and community development processes. Staff conduct feasibility and market analyses; secure financing; oversee construction, leasing and property management; and work to preserve the properties. Staff also provide technical assistance to community groups.

Funding

Developments are financed with a combination of debt and equity that may include equity raised through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit; a first mortgage loan from a financial institution; low-interest loans or grants from city, state, or federal housing agencies; and gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
